Thanks to the British Gas Individuals and Families Fund, you may be able to qualify for energy bill grants from the largest energy company in the UK, even if you’re not a customer. If you’re struggling with debt and haven’t been able to pay your energy bills, or you have certain meter types, you may be able to qualify.

What Is It?

Individual grants based on £1,500 are available from British Gas this winter. If you have a prepayment meter or are on a credit meter, you may already qualify. Existing customers can apply for the Energy Support Fund, offering the same amount for those with energy debts. Whether you’re a British Gas customer or not, you will be eligible for grants and advice.

Energy Bills

The October price cap was set at £1,834, which will last until the end of December. The grants will come in handy as the price of energy will rise by around 5% next month, increasing to an average of £1,928 a year for the average household. If you are, or will be, struggling with energy bills and find yourself in need of help to pay off arrears, this scheme could help you.

In order to qualify for this energy bill grant, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • A pre-payment or credit meter customer within England, Scotland or Wales

  • Not have had an energy grant from British Gas in the last two years

  • The grant will clear energy debt held in your name

  • It’s for your main residence

  • Received money or debt advice in the last three months

If you’ve been struggling to pay energy bills but piled up debts elsewhere instead, the energy grants can’t be used for that. They are designed to be exclusively used to clear off energy debt. As well as this, you will have to prove that you are suffering from energy debt and actually received advice on finances or debts.

How to Apply

Since 2021, the British Gas energy grants have helped people clear energy debts by as much as £100 million. Advice can be sought and applications can be submitted through the British Gas Energy Trust website, and you’ve got until 31st March 2024 to put in a claim.

If You Don’t Qualify

For any household not in energy poverty or in energy debt, there are ways in which you can claim back money which you can put towards energy and other debts.

PPI Tax Refund

If you ever had a PPI payout, you could be entitled to claim back the tax that was taken off it before it was awarded. Thanks to a change in the rules on earning interest tax-free every year, this could give you a little boost thanks to a PPI tax claim.

Plevin PPI

How much commission did you pay on your PPI? If it was higher than 50%, you can claim anything above this level back. This is because it demonstrated an unfair trading relationship that put you out of pocket. A Plevin PPI claim can get you this money back.

Housing Disrepair

Is your property in need of repair? Does your landlord ignore you or not bother fixing any issues? You could be entitled to make a housing disrepair claim. This legally forces your landlord to confront any issues and make your home liveable again.
